The 10th edition of “GM Radio: Beyond The Price”, published by CoinPost Global on November 22nd, featured the event “Nostrasia” held from November 1st to 3rd in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and online.

The word Nostrasia is a combination of two words: “Nostr”, the theme of the event, and “Asia”, the location of the event.

Nostr is a protocol that serves as the basis for developing decentralized SNS. The event attracted a lot of attention, with sessions featuring Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter (currently known as X), and Edward Snowden, a former employee of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

First, regarding his impressions of Nostrasia, independent filmmaker Max DeMarco said that he felt there was a lot of discussion about “how to get more people to use Nostr.” In particular, there was discussion about how to spread the word to people who are not technical experts.

DeMarco also participated in Nostrica, which was held in Costa Rica in Central America in March of this year, and said that the main topic of discussion at that time was technology and mechanisms. He is producing a documentary (video below) about Nostrica (Japanese subtitles available).

Nostrica organizer Marce similarly said that Nostrica brought developers together to talk about ideas and new tools.

Possibilities and challenges of Nostr

We also interviewed Greg Kidd, who has worked with Dorsey since before Twitter was founded. Kidd was an early investor in Lightning Network and Nostr.

He said he is dissatisfied with the current state of Twitter and has high hopes for Nostr, which can build a decentralized social network. He says he hopes the social network built on Nostr will replace Twitter, Reddit, etc., and that all content will be posted on Nostr’s network.

By doing so, users will be able to truly own their own data and posts, and Nostr will bring to content the same revolution that the cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC) brings to money. Told.

He also sees potential in a feature called “Zap,” which allows users to donate money on Nostr using the Lightning Network, and says he hopes it will create a new revenue model.

On the other hand, Nostr is still in its infancy and has some issues. Mr. Kidd said that because the product is complex and there is a lot of content related to Bitcoin, general users do not stick to Nostr, and it seems that only developers are using it.

He also argues that collaborating with other protocols such as Bluesky is one way to increase the appeal of Nostr. Rather than trying to do everything with Nostr, we encourage protocols to partner up to compete with Web2.

Product introduction

Products were also introduced at Nostrasia.

For example, the founder of Coinkite, which develops Bitcoin-related products, introduced a device called “Satslink.” This is a device that protects communications in the same way that a hardware wallet protects Bitcoin.

According to the official website, at the time of writing this article, there are limited numbers, and reservations are currently being accepted. Satslink is a device that can communicate in P2P format, and can be used for various purposes depending on the developer’s imagination.
