“Defund the police” is an emotionally satisfying slogan. But, it’s too simplistic by far. The real questions are: What are our actual needs? What is the cost, and how do we best fund it?Currently, most services such as public works, public education, and public safety are provided and funded locally. Typically, suburban communities — mostly white and affluent — can, and do, provide luxury-level services with an emphasis on education.
