In the cryptocurrency world, GitHub plays a major role as it is the platform where the cryptocurrencies launch their TestNets; a mock version of their MainNets before the launch. Any software update or blockchain crisis, most of the technical errors and bugs are sorted using GitHub. This system now is acquired by Microsoft!
Microsoft, in their blogs, announced saying:
“Today, we announced an agreement to acquire GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform. I want to share what this acquisition will mean for our industry and for developers.”
GitHub Inc. is a web-based hosting service for version control using Git. The main usage of it is in computer coding. GitHub offers all of the distributed version control and source code management [SCM] functionality of Git as well as adding its own features. It provides access control and several collaborative features such as bug tracking, feature requests, task management, and wikis for several projects.
Open-source programming enables designers to tinker with, enhance, and offer code – an approach that undermined Microsoft’s plan of action. A considerable measure has changed from that point forward, and under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft is supporting numerous tastes of Linux and has utilized open-source models on some critical cloud and designer items.
As Nadella moves the company away from complete dependence on the Windows operating system to more in-house development on Linux, the company needs new ways to connect with the broader developer community. Hence, GitHub!
According to Bloomberg, GitHub preferred selling the company to going public and chose Microsoft partially because it was impressed by Nadella.
GitHub was last valued at $2 billion in 2015. As of now, there is no information about the cost of acquisition.
CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella says:
“Together we will continue to advance GitHub as a platform loved by developers and trusted by organizations.”
Microsoft has new plans for GitHub, is it speculated to be a step towards new open models or possibly the crypto-world.
