Homelessness in Florida

The Department of Children and Families’ most recent report says that there are 85,907 persons homeless on any given day. Homelessness is a reality for urban, mid-sized and rural communities who need attention. The Department of Children and Families’ report also indicates that only about 9,000 emergency shelter beds and an additional 13,000 transitional shelter beds are available to provide lodging to the entire homeless population and there is dire need for more assistance from private players.

Sean’s Outpost, a small homeless outreach organization is based in Pensacola, Florida and tries to make up sack lunches and take them into the fringes of society to feed the homeless. Founder Jason King says that his volunteers journey under bridges and overpasses to search the homeless to help them.

 

Jason King also says that his volunteers delve deep into the makeshift thunderdome-esque camps that many of the unhoused dwell in. The volunteers go there with no political or religious message but with food and water and tell them to stay safe and stay strong.
